Biosaccharide Gum
What does it do?
Biosaccharide Gum is a multifunctional ingredient that binds water to the epidermis (the top layer of your skin), creating a moisture-binding film to provide intense hydration to the skin. This ingredient also helps to stimulate "youth proteins" to prevent premature signs of ageing as well as increase the production of collagen.
In addition to this, Biosaccharide Gum is an effective ingredient for soothing irritated and sensitive skin.
Where does it originate from?
Biosaccharide Gum is created from sorbitol (a sugar alcohol) through the process of bacterial fermentation. This is where sugars are transformed into new compounds; in this example, the bacteria break down the sorbitol under anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions to produce the polysaccharide gum ferment.
When should I use it?
This ingredient can be used day and night.
What skin type is it best suited to?
Biosaccharide Gum is suitable for all skin types but ideal for mature or sensitive skin types.
What does it work well with?
Biosaccharide Gum increases the synthesis (production) of epidermal and dermal (top and middle layers of skin) hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is synthesised by specific membrane-bound enzymes and then pushed into space outside the cells. Biosaccharide gum can be paired with Hyaluronic Acid to complement this process.
What else do I need to know?
This ingredient is known as a S.M.A.R.T ingredient, which is an acronym for Soothing, Moisturising, Anti-Ageing, Restructuring, Touch.
Soothing: it has the ability to reduce skin irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin experiencing everyday pollutants
Moisturising: with a similar ability as Hyaluronic Acid to retain moisture long-term
Anti-Ageing: the ingredient stimulates DNA repair, resistance to oxidative stress, and generally reduces signs of premature ageing
Restructuring: regenerating barrier function and strengthening the upper layers of the epidermis
Touch: softening the feel of your skin, as well as giving it a silky texture
