What is skincare sandwiching?

A:

We’re thrilled to announce that Q+A has officially launched into Tesco! You’ll now be able to find some of your favourite skincare staples (and maybe some things you’ve not seen before 👀) conveniently nestled among the supermarket aisles, making it easier than ever to achieve a radiant, glowing complexion.

If there’s one thing Tesco is renowned for, it’s the iconic meal deal! But they’re not the only ones who can craft the perfect sandwich. Here at Q+A, we have the ingredients for the perfect ‘skincare sandwich’. In this week's post, I’m here to spill the tea on two classics: the moisture sandwich and the Retinol sandwich. So, let’s dive in...

What is moisture sandwiching?

Moisture sandwiching involves layering skincare on top of damp skin to increase hydration levels and boost moisture retention. You’re effectively using products to create a barrier to lock in hydration and prevent Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). This means either applying your skincare post-cleanse or after dampening with a hydrating face mist. This method of application helps to ensure that every drop of goodness sinks deep into your skin for lasting hydration and a healthy, radiant glow. Imagine your skincare routine as a delicious sandwich, with layers of hydration sandwiched between nourishing ingredients.

How to create a moisture sandwich?

  1. Start by dampening the skin by either toning your face (try the Niacinamide Daily Toner) or spritzing your skin with a face mist.
  2. Follow with a light, hydrating, humectant serum like our Peptide Facial Serum and allow time for it to sink into the skin.
  3. Finally, lock in the hydration by finishing with your moisturiser of choice to seal in the skin benefits. Our Hyaluronic Acid Daily Moisturiser is a great choice, but feel free to pick whatever suits your skin best

What is Retinol sandwiching?

If you’re venturing into the world of Retinol for the first time, this sandwiching technique may be a great place to start. A ‘Retinol sandwich’ involves layering moisturiser below and on top of your Retinol to help prevent irritation and act as a buffer to reduce the risk of sensitivity. When using Retinol, it’s important to start with a low inclusion and slowly build up skin tolerance (click here to learn more). Plus, remember to apply SPF daily when using Retinol to protect your skin.

How to create a Retinol sandwich?

  1. Start by cleansing to remove any makeup or impurities with a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser, like the Oat Milk Cream Cleanser and make sure to pat your skin dry.
  2. Apply a light layer of moisturiser and allow time for this to be absorbed by the skin.
  3. Dispense a pea-sized amount of Retinol Facial Serum and gently massage it into your face. Again, allow enough time for the Retinol to be fully absorbed.
  4. Finally, follow with another layer of moisturiser to complete the sandwich. Ideally, pick a product formulated with nourishing ingredients like the Collagen Face Cream.

Our Retinol Facial Serum is specially formulated with a low-irritation grade of Retinoid, so you may find you can skip the Retinol sandwich altogether!

With these sandwiching techniques, you'll be well on your way to achieving happy, healthy skin all year round. Whether you opt for the classic moisture sandwich or the protective Retinol sandwich, these methods are here to help you glow!
